Take a one-unit class and go snow camping in the mountains of California!!! WHAT IS THE OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM? (OEP): Heralded as the most fun class on campus, GES7, a one-unit class, teaches introductory outdoor, camping, and mountaineering skills. You do not need any prior backpacking or climbing experience to participate in the class. You will need personal clothing, but we can outfit you with all the necessary equipment and group gear. WHEN DOES CLASS MEET? The class meets winter quarter every Wednesday from 7-9 PM Building 320 Room 220. WHAT SORT OF TRIPS DO WE GO ON? There are 4 weekend trips during the quarter. The trips this quarter will be Jan 20 - 22 (intro to snow camping and skiing), Feb 3 - 5 (Backcountry skiing), Feb 17 -19 (intro to mountaineering), Mar 3 -5 (student led trip). All trips are mandatory and extraordinarily fun. We visit different locations each quarter but common trip destinations include Yosemite, Sequoia National Park, and the wilderness areas near Lake Tahoe. All trips leave Friday around dinner time and return Sunday night. WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS CLASS? The class is geared for students who have little or no experience backpacking or camping in the backcountry. We will teach all the skills required for safe and fun backcountry travel in the snow. Class topics include selection and proper use of clothing and gear, food and water concerns, first aid, backcountry navigation, weather assessment, minimum impact camping, group dynamics, avalanche safety and outdoor leadership. Graduates from OEP should be able to plan and lead their own trips into the backcountry of California. HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR OEP? No sign-ups required, just show up to the first class Wednesday, January 11th 7:00pm Building 320 Room 220. Enrollment is limited to 12 students so bring a check to the first class to secure a spot. WHO TEACHES THIS CLASS? OEP instructors are all Stanford students (half graduate students and half undergrad) who have extensive outdoors experience. IS THIS CLASS REALLY THAT MUCH FUN? Yes! Going into the mountains of California with 12 other Stanford students 4 weekends during winter quarter could be the best thing you do at Stanford! IS THERE A CLASS FEE? Yes. A fee of $250 covers food, travel, and gear for 4 trips to the Sierras. A Chris Hooyman memorial scholarship is available (the application is really easy). QUESTIONS? THE JANUARY 15TH DEADLINE FOR THE STANFORD SPONSORED WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER (WFR) CLASS IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!!! This is the first time this class has been offered at Stanford and depending on interest, may be the last time it is offered for a while. Because the class is partially subsidized by Stanford, this is one of the best deals out there. Provided by the Wilderness Medicine Institute, the WFR is an amazing 80 hour course that will train people to handle medical emergencies in the backcountry. Some outdoor jobs require this certification. A lot of work has been invested in having this class at Stanford so that we can foster a safer outdoors community here. Participants in the course are heavily encouraged to lead trips for the various outdoor organizations on campus. A more detailed description (as well as instructions on how to sign up) of the course is at: http://www.stanford.edu/group/redwood/wfr/ The class will take place during our Spring Break, between Saturday, March 25th through Monday, April 3rd. The class will cost $375. Financial aid (exact amount will be determined when the list of participants are finalized) will be available to Stanford students who are involved in the Outdoor community. (if there are any questions of this, please see the above website, or contact us at wildernessfirstresponder AT gmail.com) So sign up fast (the first deadline is Jan. 15th, less than a week away)! There are only 30 spots available . If more than 30 people sign up, there will be a random drawing on Jan. 16th to decide who can take the class. Stanford students will be given first priority. RESERVE YOUR SPOT NOW! Please go to http://www.stanford.edu/group/redwood/wfr/ to take steps toward reserving a spot. --------------------------------------------------------- 5) Redwood Planning Meeting (New Location!)
