WHY: This skill is an essential first step towards learning to lead climb, and its perfect for being able to set up topropes and go climbing at castle rock or pinnacles! WHO: People who have already climbed outdoors and know how to belay/ rappel and maybe have even set up a toprope or two (although that isn't a requirement). Class size will be limited to 6-8, first come first served. MATERIAL COVERED: how to make a good anchor, personal safety when in exposed locations (like on the top of a cliff!), how to assess your own anchors/protection as well as other peoples, different belay techniques, 'biner and rope characteristics and other related skills. WHEN: Sat.-Sun, May 15-16. The anchors class will be taught on Sat. and all participants will be expected to then help set up anchors for the introductory class on Sun. This is a great way to practice your new skills and internalize them before you forget them! plus you get to meet lots of other people in the Stanford climbing community. WHERE: Castle Rock, about 45 min. drive from campus. you'll be home both friday and saturday nights, but you should be ready to leave early in the mornings and be back around dark; be ready to leave the parking lot w/ the whole group by 7:30 approximately (more exact time information will come later). COST: For non-Alpine-Club members the cost will be $25, that does not include food (bring your own) or gas (should be ~$5) but it does include any gear you might need to rent. For Alpine-Club members the cost is $15 not inculding food or gas, but again including rentals. Payment is required in advance because we don't want to turn people away who want to go and then have someone who did get in not show up. GEAR: All gear rentals are included in the cost of the trip. Gear can be rented from the Alpine Club on Wednesdays 6-7pm. The gear checkout is located at the climbing wall in DeGuerre Courts. You can contact Brian Gibbons, (bgibbons [AT] stanford.edu) or me for more info. HOW: reply to this email (PLEASE DON'T REPLY ALL or everyone will hate me) and tell me 1) your climbing experience (outdoor, indoor, do you rappel, do you know basic knots for tying in while climbing, have you set up anchors before, etc.). 2) what you hope to get out of this class 3) A funny joke (most important qualification, fyi: im not offended easily). Space is limited to 6-8 people and spots will be handed out on a first come first served basis. Hope to hear from you soon, chuck %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Charles Booten Mech. Eng. Dept.
