So the question is, "Are there actually any alpinists in the alpine club?" With a week off for Thanksgiving, I am looking to head over to the east side of the Sierra for a little early season winter mountaineering. I know virtually everyone in the club prefers rock and will be cragging down in J-Tree, but it is so rare to find large chunks of time mid-semester in winter to make the trip to the east side worthwhile once the passes close. I simply can't pass up the opportunity. There are some classic winter objectives over a range of difficulties. The technical range I am considering is class 3 (Mountaineers route, Mt. Whitney; NE Face, Middle Palisade) to low class 5 (East Ridge, Mt. Humphreys) that cover a variety of commitment levels. The parenthetical routes are just examples. If the ice is in over in Lee Vining a day or two of ice climbing may be an option as well. At this point the exact itinerary is up in the air and would be decided by the interests and experience of the group. For example, a couple of short trips (2-3 days long each)or basecamp in an area with multiple climbs (full week). Depending on snow levels a little backcountry skiing may be possible for descents and the trip(s)out. If anyone is interested, regardless of experience, please shoot me an email with the following information. -- Name: Experience Levels ----------------- Rock Climbing: General Mountaineering: Avalanche: Ice Climbing: Equipment Deficiencies ---------------------- Winter Camping: Mountaineering: Avalanche Gear: Do you have a vehicle? Make/Model/4WD -- Don't let a lack of equipment discourage you, I have spare gear that I rent out very cheaply. The club also has gear to rent, and worst case scenario local climbing shops will rent out much of the equipment. Note that THIS IS NOT A FORMAL SAC TRIP, but I am willing to teach many of the skills if the most of the group is inexperienced. I only have room for 2-3 other people on my rope, but if there is enough interest/experience we can always form multiple teams. Bring on the POWDER;) David
