Francisco O. Ramirez is Professor of Education and (by courtesy) Sociology. His comparative
research interests include the globalization of education, the political reconstitution of
gender and age, and the institutionalization of science in education and in society. His
research on education, science and development is supported by grants from the Spencer
Foundation and from the Bechtel Initiative on Global Growth and Change. Stanford University
Press will publish his book, Science and the Modern Worl Polity: Institutionalization and
Globalization. (2002). He has been a recipient of a Spencer Foundation Mentor Network Award
and currently serves as the Chair of the Social Sciences, Policies, and Educational Practices Area with the Stanford School of Education. He teaches courses on world, societal, and educational change, on gender issues, and on educational sociology.
