On Oct 30th, at studio 5 & 6 lounge room, ACSSS hosts a mixer to celebrate Halloween. Because most of students are busy to prepare costumes, and there are other costume party on campus, costumes are not a requirement for this mixer. The main theme of the party is to make pumpkin lights. ACSSS has bought necessary materials and tools, including more than ten pumpkins, curving tools, and candles. The students are very enthusiastic about the activity. More than 70 students came to the mixer. At last, every pumpkin became a nice art work. The party ends in colorful lights from the pumpkins and cheers from the participants. This mixer is prepared by ACSSS social activity department.

What? A traditional welcome party with food services and performances open to all the new students and old students.

When? Sep. 26th, Started from 11am, ended at around 3pm.

Where? As a tradition, we hosted welcome party in the backyard of Bechtel International Center.

Who? Of course, the major participants are our dear new students! Also, we invited Consul Yan from San Francisco. Our VIPs also have Stanford Professors and Parents representatives.Totally around 300 people showed up at the party.

How? This time, almost all of the performers and volunteers, other than board members, are new students. The consul appreciated the MCs very much that she said they were like people from our national broadcast. The performances are amazing too. Not only did they bring laugh and happiness to audiences by ‘Three sentences and a half’ comedy, but also did they give the audiences a graceful music experience by singing and piano-playing. They even kept most of the audiences to last minute, because there was an impressive fashion show at last of the party. Our audiences, apart from saw performances, also took a great time social and net-working around. We had a nice party even the sun is shining brightly at noon. All of these could not have realized without the warm support from our volunteers!

On Aug 30th, 4 days after Chinese Traditional Valentine’s day, a singles’ party is hosted by ACSSS, at studio 5&6 lodge room.

This party is designed and organized by two ACSSS members, Peng and Ruo. 10 boys and 10 girls are randomly chosen to attend the party. At the beginning, each participant wears fancy masks on face so that the participants can not watch the appearances of each other. After some ice-break talk, there is a matching process. And later, more cooperation-based games are carried out, including a word-guess, a ear-to-ear translate a sentence, and eating water melons. After three matching process, finally three pairs are successfully matched and awarded fancy prizes.

The party is a great success and full of fun because of the organizers’ exceptional entertainment talents and careful preparation. Let us applaud for their ingenious creativity, and their great contributions of improving the life and social quality of Chinese students/scholars community!

About 60 Chinese students attended this event. The invited speaker, Eunice Buhler, is a sophomore here at Stanford, with extensive social experiences. She is now an active member of Stanford Consulting. Before she came to Stanford, she was the founder of ‘Culture for Youth’, a non-profit organization that teaches young people about cultures and promotes cultural acceptance. She worked with both the World Bank and the U.S. State Department and currently serves on the Youth Service America Advisory Council.

In this salon, Eunice gave a one and half hour talk on how to communicate in both casual and formal cases; how to appreciate American humor and jokes and the etiquette for different social situations . She brought up with many interactive parts in her talk. The audiences were invited to participate in imitating real life situations. They also asked Eunice questions about what they concerned. Many of the students feel that the event was great and they learned something from it.

On April 4 and 5, Splash! was held on Stanford campus for the second time. This program provides extracurricular enrichment for high school students in the Bay Area by offering academic and non-academic classes designed and taught by volunteer students at Stanford. This quarter, for the first time, 8 students and scholars from mainland China offered 6 classes to 80 high school students with the coordination of ACSSS. Our topics cover Chinese culture, music, education, and traveling around China.

Our classes received ecstatic feedback from high school students and even their parents. “The children are now asking to visit China,” said a father who accompanied his children to Stanford in his email to us, “You did a great job getting them excited!”

“One of the best qualities of Splash is that a tremendous variety of classes can do well there,” quoted Michael Shaw, president of Stanford Educational Studies Program, who initiated and leads Splash! at Stanford, “We’re excited to have you involved with Splash this year!”

Our volunteer teachers are as excited. A lot of them expressed the intention to teach again in the future. “I have already started thinking about topics of more interest to high school students.” says one of our volunteer teachers. Indeed, since Splash! is going to return at the beginning of autumn quarter, stay tuned and prepare your own topic to enrich the event!
