  • Natalie Angier, The Beauty of the Beastly, 1995, 278p ($12.95) - EXCELLENT, highly recommended, speaks right to the high school level. (Mixing The Gene Pool)
  • William Ashworth, The Economy of Nature, 1995, 340p (22.95) - "Rethinking the connections between ecology and economics". Basically good ecology is good economics and vice versa.
  • Fritjof Capra, The Web of Life, 1996, 347p ($23.95) - systems theory, deep ecology, chaos theory. Appears to be a good understanding of where science is going?
  • James Crow, Developmental Genetics, 15:205-213 (1994), The Advantages of Sexual Reproduction (Mixing The Gene Pool)
  • Hoagland and Dodson, The Way Life Works, 1995, 233p ($35.00) - really explains molecular biology with lots of great illustrations.
  • Christian de Duve, Vital Dust, 1995, 362p ($25.00 though I got this book heavily discounted) - from dust to the present, how chemistry and life evolved.
  • Adrian Forsyth, A Natural History of Sex, 1986, 192p (Mixing The Gene Pool)
  • Scott Gilbert, Developmental Biology, 5 th Edition, 1997, 918p, $65 - previous editions have been excellent.
  • Gerhart & Kirschner, Cells, Embryos, and Evolution, 1997, 642p, $65 - EXCELLENT
  • Bart Kosko, Fuzzy Thinking, 1993, 318p - not biology per se, but shows the "shades of grey" in out existence and how numbers are not always the answer for describing and interpreting life.
  • Sidney Leibes, Elisabet Sahtouris, & Brian Swimme, A Walk Through Time, 1998, 223 pages, $30 - excellent look at the evolution of the geo- and biospheres on earth. VERY visual.
  • John A. Moore, Science as a Way of Knowing, 1993, 530p ($38.50) - good resource for teachers (Core Lab)
  • Clive Ponting, A Green History of the World, 1991, 430p ($12.95) - the rise and fall of civilizations from an ecological perspective.
  • Gilbert & Raunio, Embryology, Constructing the Organism, June 1997, 550p, $70 - This book should be excellent, based on their past work and the flyer sent out.
  • Lewis Thomas, Lives of the Cell
  • Mary S. Tyler, Developmental Biology, A Guide for Experimental Study, 1994, 168p, $25 paper - designed for college students, but much can be gained even for the high school level.
  • Peter Ward, The End of Evolution, 1994, 301p ($12.95) - are humans going to be the cause of the next great extinction, similar to the one that killed all the dinosaurs? (Brooder & Spawners)

  • Take Charge Computing, for Teens & Parents, by Pam Dixon, 1996, 351p ($24.99) - lots of help for parents for students 12-20, from the web to software to lock out programs
  • Cyberspeak, on Online Dictionary, by Ihnatko, 218p ($12.95) - glossary of all of the terms likely to be encountered in computers and on the internet.
  • The Family PC Guide to Homework, by Keizer, 311p ($24.95) - how to use the computer to help with homework in all subjects
  • The Family PC Guide to Cool PC Projects, by Mead, 310p ($24.95) - this may be a good book to get an otherwise uninterested child interested in computers, or a parent to help "justify" their computer "lust."
  • Great Software for Kids and Parents, by Miranker, Elliott, 361p ($24.99) - for ages 2-12, added for completeness
  • The Ultimate Online Homework Helper, by Salzman and Pandiscio, 212p ($5.99) - how to use the internet to help with homework
  • Every Family's Guide to Computers, by Winston Steward, 1995, 365p ($19.95) - two years is a long time in computers, the other books may be better.
