OBJECTIVE: The student shall demonstrate their knowledge of the parts of the microscope by correctly identifying the parts of the microscope and the ability to use the microscope by drawing specimens seen under the microscope.
PURPOSE: The use of the microscope is essential to most of the lessons in the Sea Urchin Education web site and an essential tool of the biologist. It is important that the student feel comfortable around the microscope as well as having proper habits of maintaining a microscope.
SET: How big is a bacteria compared to a yeast cell? What would we need to see each? What did they do before the invention of the microscope?

INPUT MODEL: 1) parts of the microscope STRUCTURED PRACTICE: As the instructor points out the parts of the microscope have the students identify the corresponding part on their microscope. Practice moving the objectives and stage components as a group. |
GUIDED PRACTICE: Pass out slides or cultures for students to view. Important that the instructor look through each microscope to see that the students have everything aligned properly and are not stuck on an air bubble or other artifact.
CLOSURE: What would we need to actually measure the size of each organism we saw today? How big is "really small"?
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Have students fill in blank worksheet on parts of the microscope and turn in completed drawings and lab reports.
