A critical feature of the nervous system is its ability to modulate synaptic transmission in response to particular spatial and temporal patterns of neuronal firing. Indeed, activity-dependent changes in synaptic strength have been well documented and are thought to form the basis of learning and memory. Interestingly, chronic inactivity can also lead to modifications in synaptic strength. I’m interested in elucidating the molecular mechanisms that underlie these inactivity-driven changes, and in particular, understanding how adaptation to inactivity is affected by intrinsic properties and connectivity of neurons in a network.
