The Krams and Martinez labs of the Department of Surgery operate a flow cytometer that is available for use by the local scientific community, including Stanford University affiliates and non-affiliates. The machine is located in room P335 on the third floor of the Medical School Lab Surge Building (MSLS), at the corner of Welch Road and Pasteur Drive.
FACScan Flow Cytometry Center in P335, MSLS.
The FacScan cytometer is simple to use, and training for use of the machine is provided FREE by members of the Krams/Martinez laboratories. Becton Dickinson also provides training on our machine for a fee (see below for BD contact information.) The machine has three fluorescence detectors to read emission spectra from a variety of dyes, including FITC, PE, Cy5, Propidium Iodide and others.
We use Becton Dickinson's CellQuest version 3.3 software for data analysis. Again, training and help with data analysis is provided for FREE. In addition, BD will provide training for the software for a fee. The software runs on a G3 Power Macintosh and has a color printer (HP Color LaserJet 4500) attached to print your data. There is also an Iomga Zip 100 drive and a CD-RW drive attached for saving/burning your data. Please bring your own Zip disks/CDs.
The rate for usage is $45 per hour for data acquisition (analysis time is free), billed in half hour increments (i.e., $22.50/half hour). To set up billing for Stanford affiliates, please contact our administrator Sharon Dickow at 3-7038 (sdickow@stanford.edu). We will need an account number and the name of your financial administrator. For non-affiliates, please contact us for other arrangements.
The FacScan is available for use 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week - however, access to the building is restricted from 6pm to 7am Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Arrangements for access cards for those requiring after-hours and weekend access to the building can be made for Stanford affiliates only. If you are a current user, you may call us (5-6616) to sign up for time on the machine. Alternatively, you may sign up directly on the calendar located on the door of P335.
For more information, please contact Lu-En Wai (luenwai@stanford.edu) in the TIL lab. For detailed instructions on operating the FACScan and CellQuest software, download our FACScan User Guide:
