Why Elian Should Stay

A lecture by Amy Peikoff, J.D.

This lecture will present a rational analysis of the Elian Gonzalez custody battle.  Some of the points Mrs. Peikoff will address include:

  • Why Cuba "...is such a horrible place that no one, much less a six-year-old child, should be sent to live there."
  • Why sending a child to Cuba is different from sending one to another merely impoverished country.
  • Why Juan Gonzalez' claim to "parental rights" should not be honored.
  • Why this custody battle is fundamentally a political issue.
  • Why the American public has largely been apathetic to the issue.

Amy Peikoff earned her law degree from the University of California, Los Angelos, Law School in 1998 and is currently a graduate student of philosophy at the University of Southern California.  She writes for the Association for Objective Law and lectures to Objectivist organizations in the Southwest.

Mrs. Peikoff has met Elian and his Miami relatives. She recently submitted an amicus curiae brief on the child's behalf to the federal district court of the Southern District of Florida.
