What is the Stanford Literacy Improvement Project?

The Stanford Literacy Improvement Project is a voluntary student organization dedicated to addressing the issues of literacy at Stanford University. We provide one on one tutoring for any Stanford employee seeking to improve his or her literacy skills. We also provide training for our volunteers and possess a collection of teaching aids available to anyone involved in tutoring on the Stanford campus. In addition we serve as a referral service for citizenship classes.


Program Objectives

The Stanford Literacy Improvement Project's main objective is to encourage Stanford University employees to further their oral and written English language skills. These skills will enable them to advance personally and professionally.

With the help of SLIP volunteer tutors, adult learners will be able to attain the individual goals they have set for themselves, including:

  • to improve English conversational skills
  • to improve English reading and writing
  • to learn to read or write
  • to help their children with schoolwork

SLIP is also dedicated to bringing awareness of literacy issues to the Stanford campus. Working in collaboration with other literacy programs in the area and maintaining ties with the national organizations, the project hopes to make a significant impact on the fight against illiteracy.


Tutoring

SLIP tutors come from various areas within and outside the university. Many are Stanford students, faculty and staff. Within our corps of volunteers are also some dedicated community members.

Anyone interested in helping another individual improve his or her literacy skills is encouraged to volunteer with our program. Tutors meet with their learner two hours each week at a convenient time for both.
