On April 23, Stanford in Government hosted former Vice President Al Gore. Gore’s speech, titled “Peril and Opportunity: Solving the Climate Crisis and Reinvigorating Democracy” was the first annual Stephen H. Schneider Memorial Lecture. In a question and answer session with the Vice President, SIG Chair Elise Timtim acknowledged the strength of Al Gore’s message on reinvigorating democracy, saying: ”We can see that our democracy is broken – the responsibility is on us.”

Gore, for his part, did not disappoint, giving a passionate speech to a sold-out Memorial Auditorium crowd. The Vice President ended with a message of hope to the many students sitting in the crowd: ”We’ve got everything we need, except maybe political will. But luckily, political will is a renewable resource.”

The event was co-sponsored by the Stanford Speakers’ Bureau and Students for a Sustainable Stanford (SSS)

Stanford in Government was proud to host a political debate between noted Republican strategist and key Bush advisor Karl Rove and former Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs on April 24th, 2012. The event was moderated by Stanford political science professor Rob Reich, who asked a series of hard-hitting questions on topics ranging from America’s two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to immigration and the economy. The debate was civil, but lively, with plenty of audience interaction, both in the form of clapping on both sides of the aisle and through audience questions submitted to professor Reich before the event. SIG looks forward to hosting more political debates in the future.

The event was co-hosted by the ASSU Speaker’s Bureau.

The seminars, such as the pictured seminar on “An Intelligent Military” – Senator Feingold’s vision of how to improve the operation of the intelligence services and the role of the military – are a series of intimate 90 minute discussions with students about issues on which the Senator has worked. They offer an incredible opportunity for students to engage in open and honest dialogue with a key former policymaker about issues that matter to them. SIG is excited to continue working with Senator Feingold and future Haas Distinguished Visitors.
