SIG Committees

Under the leadership of the Chair and three Vice-Chairs, SIG is organized in a committee structure. Each committee—run by a Director and staffed by two to five committee members—focuses on a defined set of goals throughout the year. Public Policy Forum (PPF) Committee

PPF seeks to encourage political dialogue on campus. Through events with policymakers and experts, lunches with renowned journalists, and campus-wide lectures and Big Speaker, PPF brings students and policy experts together to enrich Stanford's political atmosphere. Past events have included a lunch with Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Walter Pincus, a screening of the documentary King Corn followed by a discussion with its producer and director, former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, and "Big Speakers" such as Madeleine Albright, General Wesley Clark, John Edwards and most recently, Perverz Musharraf.

Campus Awareness (CA)

CA is a committee dedicated to tapping into the resource that is our vibrant, diverse, and knowledgeable campus, particularly Stanford faculty members. Our flagship project, Campus Awareness Policy Lunches, bring faculty and students together for discussion and debate on pressing local, state, national, and global issues. Last year's speakers with whom students had a chance to interact on a personal level included Scott Sagan, Sig Hecker, and Abbas Milani. Additionally, we engage in other projects to keep campus informed, aware, and passionate about political issues, this year including voter registration, the China21 conference on China's role in Chad-Sudan and Zimbabwe, and hosting the Student Initiated Course, "Current Issues in International Policymaking."

Campus and Community Partnerships (CCP) Committee

CCP focuses on civics education for the local community and on public service that relates to government and politics. In the past, CCP created a "Know Your Rights" brochure for the Palo Alto Community and taught courses in middle schools teaching the students about jury duty, the legal system, elections, and more.

This year, in the run-up to Election '08, we will hold information/debate sessions on the election (not only on the presidential candidates but also state and local politics) at area high schools, produce and distribute brochures on California ballot propositions, and get as many people as possible in the community registered to vote. We also plan to start a government/political activism club at a high school in East Palo Alto, which is a nearby low-income neighborhood. CCP enjoys a lot of flexibility in the projects it carries out, so we are excited to generate innovative service ideas with the help of our new members.

Fellowships Committees

International Fellowships Committee
DC/National Fellowships Committee
State/Local Fellowships Committee

The Stanford in Government Fellowship program sponsors over 30 fellowships every summer to send Stanford undergraduates to intern in high-profile governmental or non-profit organizations.   Stipends for fellows are administered by Stanford in Government.

Each fellowship committee has similar responsibilities within the realm of fellowships they cover. Committee members secure summer placements, review fellowship applications, interview applicants, and work with professors to select SIG fellows.  Committee members are also responsible for publicizing fellowship placements.  Among other publicity events, Fellowships Night is held each year in late November.  Committee members also arrange a photo display in the Haas Center of the most recent summer's fellows.

Operations Committee

The Operations Committee assists SIG leadership in managing a major student organization and generating innvoative projects.  Members of the Operations Committee help to organize and publicize events, promote organizational cohesion, manage the SIG budget, and streamline efforts by other committees to develop joint projects and programming.  Serving on the Operations Committee will prepare students who are interested in policy and management to take on substantive leadership roles within SIG.
