SIG Hosts Rob Reich for Policy Lunch

On Tuesday Oct. 6th, the SIG Campus Awareness group hosted a lunch discussion with Professor Reich of the Political Science department.  Reich focused on the topic of public service, and gave an introduction to a course he will be offering next quarter on the ethics of welfare.  While neither supporting nor discouraging public service, Professor Reich complicated the simplistic ways in which many students view community service.  He suggested that some 'charitable' actions may in fact be a burden to the community, while others lead to negative externalities.  We also discussed whether consent is a valid basis for exploitation.
