Main > Graduation Pledge > Senior Letter Dear Graduating Senior, Congratulations! You have every reason to be proud of your accomplishments here at Stanford, and to look forward to future opportunities in graduate school or employment. In this important time of decision-making, we would like to present you with a simple and tangible way that you can make a difference after graduation-by signing Stanford's first official graduation pledge. The graduation pledge is a nationwide effort by college students, including those at universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Manchester University. The pledge reads:
Signing the pledge is a very personal decision, and the realization of it will vary depending on individual goals and experiences. Whether you're a techie or a fuzzy, pre-med or pre-law, the pledge applies to you. For some, it may mean becoming aware of harmful company practices and trying to change them from the inside. Being persistent and adamant in expressing your concerns can potentially influence company policies for the better. For others, the pledge may mean going into the non-profit sector or working on public policy. Or it can even mean turning down employment at a company known for its poor environmental record or unjust labor practices. This is a challenging commitment to become an active and positive force in the community around you. The benefits far outweigh the costs, however; if fulfilled, the pledge can have far-reaching effects, even on a global scale. The pledge also gives students a collective voice, sending a strong message that these issues matter to us, and that our generation isn't apathetic. We have all had the immense privilege of receiving an education from a well-respected institution. We will no doubt be influential individuals because we bear the Stanford name. Stanford students and alumni can have an immense effect in promoting respect for our fellow human beings and the environment wherever we go. We have included a card on which you can sign the graduation pledge, which can be dropped off at a box in Old Union anytime before June 1, 2001. You can also sign the graduation pledge online at gradpledge.stanford.edu. All those who sign the pledge will be mailed a wallet-sized pledge card and a green ribbon to be worn at commencement on June 17, 2001. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ned Tozun at nedt@stanford.edu. Thank you for your time, and congratulations again on all your accomplishments! Best wishes, Students for Informed Career Decisions |
