Home Writing Workshops Anthology Information Spring Convention Contact Us Volunteering

If you are a Stanford student or recent graduate and are interested in volunteer with Stanford Anthology for Youth, please send us an email! We are always accepting new members!

The purpose of this page is to give you a feel for the kinds of things you can do as a member of SAY. No one is limited to selecting a single activity. In fact, we hope that everyone will want to participate in every aspect of SAY, from publication to convention. However, we would like to know what your primary interests are, so we can best accommodate you!

Workshops (Fall)
  • lead in-class creative writing workshops at local middle schools
  • participate in workshop leader training sessions and coordinate workshop schedules
  • develop outreach materials for area middle schools informing them of our program
Reading and Editing (Winter)
  • formulate criteria for accepting submissions (by genre, including art) based on past levels of quality
  • collect submissions and organize reading of submissions by all members
  • create system which all members will use to type and edit accepted submissions
Layout and Publication (Winter)
  • create template in PageMaker or (preferably) other application for anthology
  • work with printers to make sure we're getting the best deal
  • layout all sections of the anthology, compile writings and art, lists of students, student comments, etc.
  • oversee all aspects of publication until it goes out to printers
Convention (Spring)
  • communicate with teachers and schools to get them to bring their classes
  • contact children's authors or others to find a keynote speaker
  • deal with logistics of lunches, parking, reserving rooms
  • schedule workshops and recruit workshop leaders (SAY members get priority!)
Communications (All Year)
  • organize contacting of schools by all SAY members
  • send out schools packets to schools and compile list of those contacted
  • organize visits to teachers and classes to introduce SAY to students and/or run mini-workshops
  • coordinate with local libraries and bookstores in posting display stands for SAY
  • seek sponsorship from educational and teachers' organizations and corporations
