Stanford University
November 2000
The Institute for International Studies and the Asia/Pacific Research Center are pleased to invite proposals for South Asian studies at the university for the academic year 2001-2. The initiative has been made possible by financial support from the President's Fund, the Fund of the Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences and outside grants.
Earlier awards have supported course development in South Asian studies in the departments of anthropological sciences, history, political science, religious studies and social anthropology; research on South Asian American literature, transnational media and popular values; a distinguished speaker series in the humanities; and conferences on policy reform in South Asia.
Proposals will be accepted from faculty and students or research scholars with faculty sponsors. Multi-year proposals are welcome. Preference will be given to proposals that will attract additional, outside financial support, are collaborative and interdisciplinary and involve the institutional development of courses.
Application Procedure:
1. All proposals should be no more than 6 pages in length.
In addition, applicants should submit a budget and relevant biographical
information.
2. Proposals by students or research scholars should be accompanied
by a letter of recommendation from the faculty sponsor covering the relevance
of the proposed work and the sponsored person's ability to undertake such
work.
3. Course development proposals should be accompanied by approval from
the department head; a statement on how it fits in with the department's
long-term course development goals; and the need for ongoing support.
4. Research proposals should be supported by literature references
and at least one referee; the need for ongoing support should also be stated.
5. Proposals should be submitted by January 31, 2001 to the South Asia
