SLSQ Chamber Music Seminar Enrollment

"Every instrument received special coaching and help, as well as the group as a whole."

St. Lawrence String Quartet Chamber Music Seminar Participants

The Chamber Music Seminar at Stanford attracts participants from 18 to 82 years, ranging from intermediate to advanced in skill. While most attendees are in pre-formed ensembles (which are given preference for admission), others are assigned to new groups before the seminar. Though most participants are string players, we also welcome pianists and wind players with an interest in chamber music. Participants from our previous seminars have overwhelmingly rated their experience outstanding and hoped to return again to enjoy the experience of working with the St. Lawrence and our adjunct faculty.

Enrollment

Enrollment for the 2013 seminar is now closed. Enrollment is limited, due to space considerations. Individual players are encouraged to apply, but preference is given to pre-formed ensembles.
Note: All applicants must be at least 18 years of age. A non-refundable $50 application fee is required. Pre-formed quartets need only send in one application, and the application fees are $25 for each ensemble member. Payment should be made out to Stanford University.
Note: The application fee is not a deposit on tuition, but a fee for processing applications and must accompany the application.

Audition and Repertoire Requirements

A CD, DVD, or a YouTube / DropBox link for your audition video must accompany your application. Please label the CD / DVD with your name and instrument (or all of the names/instruments if applying as an ensemble). Applicants must present two contrasting selections. The following repertoire is intended as a guide, representing the minimum requirements in terms of difficulty:

Violin: 1st mvt. Mozart or any standard romantic / modern concerto, plus any selection from Bach’s Solo Sonatas and Partitas.
Viola: One movement from a Bach Suite, plus a contrasting movement from the standard viola repertoire.
Cello: One movement from an unaccompanied Bach Suite and one movement from a standard concerto, such as Saint-Saëns, Haydn, Dvořák, or Elgar.
Piano: Any first movement of a Beethoven trio, plus a movement from another contrasting work (trios, quartets, or quintets by Brahms, Schumann, Dvořák, Fauré, Ravel, etc.) or works of comparable difficulty.
Quartets: Two contrasting movements from the standard quartet repertoire.
Other Ensembles: Two contrasting movements from the standard chamber repertoire.

Your submission will not be returned. Stanford is not responsible for the return of audition materials.

Tuition

Tuition for the SLSQ Chamber Music Seminar at Stanford is $1,000 per person. Virtually every music student receives tuition assistance, and Stanford students can often receive assistance from Friends of Music at Stanford. Some pre-formed student groups may receive travel assistance. If you would like to be considered for financial assistance, please include a statement with your application indicating your need and circumstances. Acceptance letters will include decisions about scholarship assistance. Application fees are separate from tuition payments and cover only the costs of processing applications. 75% of your tuition payment must be received by May 15th. If an accepted applicant is unable to attend, a refund of 75% tuition may be requested. 75% tuition refunds will only be granted if extenuating circumstances prevent your attendance, and notice is given no later than 72 hours prior to the start of the Seminar.

Housing and Food Services

If you plan to stay in campus housing, please indicate that with your application. Also, include names of which members of your ensemble (if applicable) wish to room together; rooms are double occupancy. For an extra fee, you can also request a single room. If you prefer not to stay on campus, the Conference Office can recommend a range of hotels and motels near the campus.

During the seminar, meals are available at a variety of on-campus locations, or at restaurants in nearby Palo Alto.
