Texas Pride

Deep in the heart of Stanford are some true Lone Star souls. The newly formed Stanford Texas Club is devoted to celebrating the state's heritage. More than 40 students showed up for the club's first meeting; several wore cowboy boots and hats, and one came draped in the state flag. At a February gathering, organizers served Texas-shaped tortilla chips imported from home. The group plans an Independence Day barbecue on March 2, and the leaders are mulling a horseback ride through White Plaza to lasso new members. One thing the group needs: a Texas-sized fund raiser. "Our budget doesn't go much beyond my checkbook," says Grace Wang, a co-founder from San Antonio.
