Dear Mr. Smitherman:

I have been intending to write to you ever since I met you, but absence from the city for several days has delayed my doing so. I presented your name to the church on the following Sunday, and they readily voted you in as a candidate for baptism. The baptism was to take place on last Sunday afternoon, but after talking with Chaplin Pearson I discovered that the baptismal pool had not been repaired. So we will have to wait a week or so now. In any event I will have Chaplin Pearson let you know exactly when the baptism will be. We plan to bring several members of the church out on the Sunday of the baptism to witness the ceremony.

You are constantly in my prayers. I hope you will keep the faith and keep looking up. In thses moments you need God, and He will be with you if you will properly commit yourself to Him. Feel free to write me at any time, and remember that the members of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church are continually thinking about you.
