Activity/Instructions
For this “anticipatory set” give students two minutes to write down everything that comes to mind when they think of the Vietnam war (President Johnson, Mai Lai, protests, etc.). Next, have them do the same thing for Martin Luther King, Jr. Have students break into pairs and share their answers. It is unlikely that any of the students will have any overlap between Vietnam and King.
Introduce King's "Beyond Vietnam" speech by showing Eyes on the Prize II: The Promised Land (first 10 minutes), followed by discussion.
Have students read first section of “Beyond Vietnam” (paragraphs 1-11)
