Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to help you locate census publications in the Jonsson Library. For a more detailed or comprehensive coverage of censuses and surveys, see the Bureau of the Census catalog and its updates and the American statistics index which has been issued monthly since l974. An understanding of census geography is essential to using the census data.

The population censuses (decennial censuses) have been issued since l790 with the housing statistics component added in the l940 census. The Bureau conducts a population survey program designed to update (although not in depth) census statistics. Statistics from this survey are released in the printed series Current population reports.

Other censuses conducted are taken on a five year cycle (for years ending in "2" and "7") and include those for agriculture, governments, manufacturing, transportation, and the economic censuses (retail trade, wholesale trade, and service industries). These Censuses are also updated by surveys including government employment and finance series, Annual survey of manufactures, Current industrial reports, and County business patterns.

In addition to the censuses the federal government has compiled foreign trade statistics since l790 and the Census Bureau has been responsible for this program since l94l.

Census publications with the call number beginning with "I" are shelved before those publications with call number beginning with "C 3.l:" and after those publications beginning with "C 2.1:". Call numbers with small "f" or "ff" before the call number are shelved in the folio area (large size materials). Currently, many of the Census Bureau publications are available in microfiche only. If the material is not on the shelf, check the microfiche cabinets under the same call number.

To locate census materials in the Jonsson Library check Socrates if the publication is a serial (monthly, quarterly, annual, or part of a numbered series). For all other publications (including the censuses themselves) check with the reference staff for assistance.

Business, Trade and Services

(Part of Decennial and Separates)

A census of business was taken for each of the years l929, l933, l935, l939, l948, l954, l958, l963, l967, l972, l977,l982 and 1987. Censuses for l929 and l939 were taken as part of the l930 and l940 decennial censuses and those for l933 and l935 were taken as special projects. The census of l933 was the first to include service industries. Retail trade, wholesale trade, and service industries have been treated as separate parts of the economic censuses since the l972 census. In l972 the title Census of business was discontinued.

Manufactures

The first census of manufactures was taken in l809 and again every l0 years between l809 and l899 (except for the year l829), censuses were taken every 5 years between l899 and l9l9 and every 2 years through l939. After World War II the manufactures censuses were conducted for the years l947, l954, l958, l963, l967, l972, l977, and l982. Future censuses will be conducted every 5 years in years ending "2" and "7".

The Annual survey of manufactures was conducted each year from l949 to l953, l955 to l957, l959 to l962, l964 to l966 to l97l, l973 to l976, l978 to l98l, and l983 to present. These surveys (based on a scientific sample of manufacturing establishments) provide statistics for the years between the censuses. Commodity survey data also appears in the series Current industrial reports published monthly, quarterly, and annually depending on the commodity.
