The Rains Houses, January 1994
Fall of 1993, at the beginning of the academic year, we
discovered that there was a pretty sizeable Indonesian community at
Stanford, about 39 individuals total. Then we thought, wouldn’t it be
nice if we could group up and do something together, for fun, for anything.
So in winter of 1994, we sent letters out, inviting other Indonesians to
join. |

Eleven of us showed up at the
first meeting at Rains Houses, Alex Purwanto, Christopher Gozali,
Deddy Sudarijanto, Freddy Pranajaya, Iwan Tantra, Johny Enoch, Kenneth
Taurany, Made Suarjana, Rinaldy Sudjatmiko, Sampoerno Njono, and Sutanto
Surjadjaja. |

We talked about what we hoped to achieve, what name should
we call ourselves; “Permias” sounded too ordinary; and the Indonesian Club
at Stanford was born. Ever since, ICS, although still at its infancy,
has grown and become more mature. But, along the way, we never lose
our sight of our goal: to be a social, an academic, and more importantly, a
professional group. Some day, there will be a Stanford
Syndicate.... |
