Procedure for Incoming Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs)

At the lab or department:

    1. Before signing an MTA, the researcher should review the agreement to ensure the terms are acceptable.

    2. The researcher should fill in all information about the material requested, the research being conducted, a shipping/billing address, etc. Please note: Arrangements for receiving the material are made between the researcher and Provider.

    3. Before sending the MTA to ICO, the researcher must complete an MTA Routing Form and have it signed by the Principal Investigator. The Routing Form may be sent to ICO by fax or campus mail.

Please note: Research involving biohazardous materials, human samples, or lab animals requires approval from the appropriate office: IRB, APLAC, Biosafety and Radiation before ICO may finalize the MTA.

At ICO:

    1. After receiving the MTA and the Routing Form, ICO reviews the agreement to ensure that the terms are consistent with Stanford Research Policies.

    2. If the MTA is acceptable, ICO will sign and send it to the Provider, with a copy to the Principal Investigator and the ICO files. If not, ICO will negotiate MTA terms with the Provider.

For any questions about this process, please contact ICO.
