For Stanford undergraduates only who wish to apply to the
The Master of Arts program is designed to broaden the student's academic background and general cultural knowledge through a series of seminars that study intellectual history from the classical period to the modern era. The seminars usually focus on specific topics or issues in the context of historical, literary, philosophical, religious, and other possible disciplinary and theoretical orientations. They provide a unique opportunity to study highly influential ideas and texts which have been central to all humanistic disciplines. Master's students gain added depth by taking advanced courses in an established discipline (for example, art history, classics, philosophy, and so on). Applicants must demonstrate appropriate background in their choices of discipline. Although by itself the Master's Program does not prepare students for university-level academic careers, it may function as a stepping stone for further graduate study or an extension of undergraduate work. The Program normally will require a two-year, half-time enrollment at Stanford, beginning with the Autumn quarter of the first year and coming to completion at the end of the Spring Quarter of the second year. Under some circumstances, it may be completed in one year as a full-time program. Students are expected to have acquired proficiency in at least one foreign language, ancient or modern, before applying to the AM Program, and must have GRE scores and the required letters of recommendation on file before their applications will be considered. For outside applicants the entering quarter is restricted to Autumn, and the application deadline is early February. Please check the exact date with Graduate Admissions. Qualified undergraduates at Stanford may petition to complete the A.M. Program coterminally with their bachelor's degrees. Co-terminal applicants are expected to have their applications in by early February to be evaluated along with those of outside applicants. However, they may begin the program immediately upon admission, and may also count a limited amount of approriate coursework taken at Stanford prior to admission. Admissions to the Program
