Students in the Humanities Honors Program who are interested in making the interdisciplinary
study of the Humanities a focus of their undergraduate work may obtain the degree of A.B. in
Humanities by developing their own interdisciplinary programs.
Within the framework of the major, students develop their own concentrations to address their
individual interests. Students may choose from one of four options. These options are described
in detail below.
Thematic Concentrations: Students may choose a period specific focus, such as:
- Culture and
Politics (including politics and literature)
- Digital Humanities
- Early Modern Studies
- Film,
Literature, and Society
- Medieval Studies
- Modern Thought and
Literature
(incorporating modern literature, cultural history, and
critical theory)
- Performance, Culture, and Society
- Philosophical and
Literary Thought
- Philosophy and the Visual Arts
- Philosophy, Literature,
and Ecology
Pre-Med Humanities: The Interdisciplinary Major in Humanities also offers a
specially designed program for students who are preparing to attend medical school but who wish
to focus their studies in the humanities. This concentration gives students a coherent way to
organize interdisciplinary interests by theme, nationality, or period. The A.B. degree conferred
is in Humanities. Students choose a concentration title that reflects the focus of their study
and this is noted on the transcript after degree conferral.
Digital Humanities:
Interdisciplinary Major in Philosophical and Literary Thought:

- Courses from another institution may be approved toward the major requirements by petition. Students who wish to make such petitions should provide copies of syllabi, course descriptions, or other relevant information.
- Students in both Options I and II are encouraged to explore the possibility of overseas study. With careful planning, time at overseas campuses can almost always be accommodated.
Students pursuing a major in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities
are encouraged to explore the possibility of overseas study. JUNIORS MAY ENROLL FOR THEIR

UNITS WHILE OVERSEAS AND MAY FULFILL THE PROPOSAL WRITING REQUIREMENTS VIA ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION.
With careful
planning, time at overseas campuses can almost always be accommodated.
Stanford's Overseas Studies Program runs nine foreign campuses in the
autumn, winter and spring quarters while students remain directly enrolled
at Stanford. Students considering this option should visit the OSP office
on the first floor of Sweet Hall, as well as discuss how a quarter abroad
might fit into their academic program with their major or academic advisor.
