The Coterminal Master of Arts Program in the Humanities

COTERMINAL PROGRAM

The Master of Arts Program in Humanities is well-suited to a coterminal BA/MA program because of its two-year, half-time structure. Applications are due in early February according to the University guidelines. Students may apply with a background in any major. Applications are available from the Registrar's Office.*

Co-Term applications are evaluated along with applications to the Master's Program from outside of Stanford. A limited number of students (usually two or three) are admitted each year.

The application should be accompanied by a statement of purpose and should clearly indicate the field of study the students wishes to use for the MA Program, as well as the student's proficiency in a foreign language. If the student's transcript does not clearly indicate sufficient background for graduate work in that discipline, the student must address this question and provide evidence of suitable preparation for taking graduate-level courses in the desired field. At least two letters of recommendation are required, and these letters should specifically address the student's competence in graduate-level courses in general and in the field of study specifically. Students must also submit a recent scholarly or critical paper as a writing sample (20 pages maximum).

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

At least 45 units of coursework beyond the BA, including

  • The five Humanities Seminars in the GPH (Humanities 321-325)
  • Four or more graduate-level seminars in the student's field of study-to be determined in consultation with and approved by the Chair of the Program. One of these must be a graduate-level seminar requiring a research paper.
  • Completion of Humanities 298, the Spring Quarter GPH Symposium, after completion of the GPH seminars.
