Acknowledgments
The Stanford Project team received an enormous amount of assistance while conducting this study. Our research was sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the government of Indonesia under a contract between BAPPENAS and Stanford University titled "Food Policy and Rural Income Generation," dated July 24, 1986. Special thanks are owed to numerous individuals at all levels in the team's counterpart agencies in the Indonesian government- BAPPENAS, BULOG, and the Ministry of Agriculture-and to officials in the central, regional, and local offices of the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Manpower, who collectively made the fieldwork possible. Critical leadership was provided by Minister Saleh Affif, Minister Bustanil Arifin, Junior Minister Sjarifudin Baharsjah, General Sukriya Atmaja, and Soetatwo Hadiwigeno. Several professionals in the U.S. AID Mission to Indonesia offered valuable substantive and administrative help. Many Indonesian farmers, employers, and workers gave freely of their time and experiences. At Stanford, Will Masters offered invaluable research assistance, contributing centrally to the first and last chapters of the book, Claudia Smith provided expert secretarial skills, and Susan Maher looked after all administrative details, especially those of a budgetary nature. To all of these institutions and individuals-and to two anonymous referees-we offer an enthusiastic vote of thanks.
