EV Goes to the Stanford Theater! Satyajit Ray Film Festival Sunday, October 19th, 7:15pm Stanford Theater in downtown Palo Alto A landmark of downtown Palo Alto, the Stanford Theater shows the good old movies that made history. As part of the Satyajit Ray Film Festival of Indian film, we will watch the movie Devi (The Goddess). This beautiful 1960 film takes place in 1860 rural Bengal and focuses on a young woman, who is deemed a goddess when her father-in-law, a rich feudal landlord, envisions her as the Goddess Kali. King Crimson Jazz Concert in San Francisco Sunday, November 2nd, 8:00pm Warfield Theater, San Francisco RSVP deadline: Wednesday, October 22nd Join your EV neighbors for for an evening of jazz music in San Francisco. Renowned jazz band King Crimson, now in its fourth decade of existence, will perform at the Warfield in San Francisco, at 8pm on November 2nd. In the words of band leader, Robert Fripp, "King Crimson lives in different bodies at different times and the particular form which the group takes changes. When music appears, which only King Crimson can play then, sooner or later, King Crimson appears to play the music." King Crimson's current line-up features Fripp on guitar, Adrian Belew (guitar, lead vocals), Trey Gunn (touch guitar) and Pat Mastelotto (drums). Upcoming Classes at the Bechtel I-Center There have been some DATE CHANGES in the Wednesday tours in November. We will reverse the order of the Nov. 12 and 19 tours: Nov. 12 - Cantor Center for Visual Arts, a guided tour of the special exhibit of America's first school of landscape painters, the Hudson River school. These early 19th century artists were fascinated by the vast wilderness and natural wonders of the New World, and inspired by an idealism towards the country's history. This exhibit is on loan from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the first permanent gallery of fine art in the U.S. (located in Hartford, Connecticut). Meet at the Cantor Center at 10:50am. Nov. 19 - Volunteering in the Community. We will visit a school, environmental center and United Nations shop to learn about the important role volunteers play in the local community, and find out if this could be a way to enrich your experience here. 9:00am-12:30pm. Meet at the Escondido Village Center. We've just added several interesting new classes to our Fall Quarter program, thanks to the kind offers of our volunteer teachers. They include: * IKEBANA (Japanese flower arranging), begins THIS THURSDAY, 1:30-3:30pm * BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY, Thursdays, 2:30-4:00pm, Oct. 23-Dec. 4 * MODERN DANCE with a Funky Twist, Wednesdays, 7:30-8:30pm, beg. Oct. 22 Monica Mark will continue her popular summer class. 5 sessions for $20. * SKIN CARE WORKSHOP, Choose one session: Oct. 22 or Nov. 5 at 5:00-7:00pm, or Oct. 29,1:30-3:30, taught by Dana Opinsky. Enjoy learning daily care of skin and experimenting with makeup. A $3 fee will cover your sample materials. COMING PROGRAMS at the I-Center for Spouses, Partners, & Families The International Cooking class is now full. The first meeting has been changed to October 29. We'll offer a similar class next quarter, and will welcome your participation as a participant or teacher of country's cuisine! Thursday, October 16: ***** NEW CLASS in IKEBANA (Japanese Style Flower Arranging, Ohara School), from 1:30-3:30pm beginning October 16. The class will meet for 4 sessions, and the fee of $30 covers all flowers for the first 3 sessions. Students will select and bring their own flowers for the 4th session. Dates: Oct. 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 13. Sign up and pay in advance, and see I-Center notice board for items to bring to the first class. Limited to 10 students. Friday, October 17: FRIDAY MORNING COFFEE: This informal gathering is an ideal way to meet other spouses and learn about the many options for enriching your stay in the Stanford area. Join us every Friday, between 10:00am and noon! We each bring a snack or fruit or juice to go with the coffee and tea provided by the I-Center. Volunteers are always needed to help set up (at 9:45 am) and put away afterwards! Everyone (with and without children, new and returning) is equally welcome! On Nov. 7, join us for Russian-style tea in a samovar! ***** FILM: SPOUSES AT STANFORD. Six international spouses share their experiences and adjustments here. 2:00pm. This film was made last year by Anna Puigdollers, an international spouse from Spain. Come and hear the reflections of other spouses in a variety of situations. *MIDDLE EASTERN BELLY DANCING class still has a few spaces! NEW FRENCH CONVERSATION CLASS AT THE I-CENTER Parlez-vous français? If you'd enjoy practicing French conversation, you're invited to join the new class at the I-Center.
