The I-Center offers several opportunities, thanks to our volunteer teachers, who are all native speakers and have come here to accompany an international student, visiting scholar or Stanford faculty/staff. Classes are usually small and animated, and provide lots of opportunities to learn about the culture as well as the language. (We may add Italian and Korean to our list soon.) Perhaps this is the time to begin!...or to continue to develop your skills in drawing, watercolor painting, pastel drawing. Or would you like to create decorative borders for towels and pillows and table linens? These will be taught in Claudia Yarto's class in Cross Stitch. Everyone is welcome to join any of these classes and sign up at the I-Center notice board to get further instructions for the classes of your choice. Many of them begin this week, so check them out and sign up at the I-Center right away! Or would you like to capture your time in California with a camera? Mi Jiang will offer a class in Basic Photography, covering the use of the camera (not digital), tips on composition, and even an introduction to black and white photography. Do you have lots of photos waiting to be put into albums? Would you like to create colorful albums to preserve the memories of your times here? Or your child's growth? Yvonne Fernandez will teach those new to "scrapbooking" (a $10 fee covers an introductory session and materials for creating one page.) If you already are familiar with this art form, you are welcome to bring your supplies and work on your scrapbook with the group! It's more fun than doing it by yourself at home! Does singing make you happy? Do you love learning new songs? Then the International Chorus will be a joyful experience for you. You'll learn songs from around the world, and teach a song from your country! Birgit Weihs-Dopfer will hold her class on Thursdays, from 4 to 5 p.m., beginning Jan. 22. Come and learn this graceful and joyful dance in 5 short sessions, and you'll know why it is such a classic at all occasions! Middle Eastern Belly Dance begins next Friday, Jan. 23, and Nightclub Salsa and Argentine Tango classes are on Mondays (except holidays). See the schedule below for details. Other ways to get good exercise in the company of a small, friendly group are the Walking for Fun and Fitness group and the Stanford Sporty Spouses, which is focusing on tennis at the moment. The Walking Group meets on Mondays at Stanford Avenue and Junipero Serra Blvd. to take a vigorous walk through the foothills to "the Dish" (radio-astronomy antenna). The Tennis Group meets on Wednesday mornings at the Escondido Village Tennis courts to volley or play matches, depending on the desires of those who show up! The I-Center offers you 3 options, all featuring delicious meals in a variety of traditions. The American Regional Cooking class will introduce some of the latest trends, such as fusion and Nouvelle cuisine, as well as recipes typical of certain regions of the U.S. The instructor, Juthica Stangl, has experience in catering and is familiar with a wide variety of cuisines around the world. This class will start on Jan. 27 (rather than Jan. 20, as posted), and requires a minimum of 5 students. Space is available, and those interested, please sign up and pay at the upstairs desk at the I-Center by this Friday, Jan. 23. The American Home Cooking class begins this Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and continues through Feb. 12. The instructor, Mrs. Dolly Sacks, enjoys sharing her favorite classics of home cooking (which does NOT include hamburgers or fast food style items!).
