The Stanford Quiz Bowl Club will host its 2005 Spring Intramural
Tournament on weeknights in May. We will work with your team to schedule
your preliminary matches on a single weeknight. The top teams will advance to
the playoffs, to be held on Thursday, May 26th from 7pm to 9pm.
The questions will cover all academic subjects (history, science,
literatue, fine arts, geography, social sciences, etc.), plus current events, pop culture and
sports. Questions will probably be provided by National Academic Quiz Tournaments; here's a sample packet.
The tournament is FREE and is open to all Stanford students except
current or former members of the Stanford Quiz Bowl Club, who cannot play
without permission of the tournament director. We will not be letting
experienced club members play.
A typical team has four players. Your team can have more than
four players, but only four can play at a time. We encourage dorms,
majors, and extracurricular groups to field teams, but you're welcome to
just grab a few friends. We prefer not to have very many one-person or
two-person teams, so email us if you're having trouble finding
teammates. We can match you up with someone. Successful teams often have
members with different areas of expertise (a science person, a literature
person, etc.). No player can play for more than one team over the course
of the tournament.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning team and to the top individual
scorers.
To register, email a team name, plus the names and email addresses of your team members to quizbowl-admin@lists.stanford.edu.
Tell us all of the following nights you could play from 7pm-9pm:
Monday, May 9
Thursday, May 12
Monday, May 16
Thursday, May 19
If you can't make any of those times, tell us all of the following
alternate nights you can make: May 10, 11, 17, or 18. Teams who can't
make the playoffs on May 26th are still allowed to play in prelims.
Also, please tell us if you or your team members don't want to be added to
a low-traffic email list (this is *not* the main Quiz Bowl Club list) for announcements of intramural quiz bowl
events.
The deadline to register is 11:59PM on Monday, May 9, 2005. But
please try to sign-up before then, since we hope to have some teams
playing that day.
After you register, club vice president Colleen Smith will email you back
telling you when are where your matches will take place. Teams failing to arrive for
their scheduled matches will forfeit them.
We will be playing a format similar to the standard college quiz bowl
format; here are the rules. Questions about the
rules can be answered by email or before the game begins.
Please, please don't cancel after the registration deadline or fail to
show up for your games event.
To get a jump on the competition, we encourage you to come play trivia
with us any Monday or Thursday night, any time between 7pm-10pm, in Room
60-62C. These practices are very informal; drop by when you can.
