Adult society and employment increasingly require
participants who are able to work together effectively as members of teams
and small groups. In addition, evidence is available that significant
learning gains (cognitive and conceptual knowledge as well as higher order
thinking skills) can be achieved by students who engage complex academic
content as members of collaborative study teams. These results apply
especially to students who read and write below grade level or who are
otherwise regarded as low academic status. Through lecture, demonstration
teaching, instructional coaching, exchanges with colleagues, the project
strengthens teachers' abilities to use small group study approaches as
an integral part of their teaching practice.
