Project Background

Since its inception, the CFLP has vigorously pursued the goal of challenging language professionals to improve and expand language programs in California and to promote foreign language education for all students. The Project aims to involve every language teacher in a supportive professional community that fosters leadership opportunities for promoting and advocating for the retention, expansion and articulation of foreign and heritage language offerings across educational levels, beginning in the elementary grades.

The Project's work is guided by a 15 member Advisory Board representing all major California educational institutions and a Faculty Advisor, Professor Amado Padilla, of the Stanford University School of Education. The project cosponsors the annual Summer Seminar for Foreign Language Teachers with the California Language Teachers Association, and has established a Support Group to assist with the preparation of California language educators who are pursuing National Board certification.
