Cultural Evolution of Environmental Norms

An interest of several Center researchers is human evolution, particularly the cultural evolution of norms, which is closely linked to our shifting relationship with the natural world and our use of its resources. For one exploration of this topic, see Paul Ehrlich's book, Human Natures: Genes, Culture, and the Human Prospect, published by Island Press in August 2000.

In this highly acclaimed book, Ehrlich challenges the concept of "human nature" as a single, static entity and explores the roles of cultural and other environmental variations in human evolution. Ehrlich is collaborating with Professor Simon Levin and others on various projects examining cultural evolution, especially of norms.
