Weather Station |
In October of 2002, we established a weather station at our Stanford Foothills Academic Reserve with an array of sensors that includes wind, air temperature, soil temperature, soil moisture content, rain, solar radiation, relative humidity and barometric pressure. This station is to support our conservation and environmental monitoring research.
We have a real time telemetry set-up which transmits climate data to the roof of our biology building every 10 minutes. These data are automatically uploaded to our web site twice hourly. We are still working out several technical and aesthetic issues with our web-based data query tools, but real time and archived data are already available.
Some archived data files are quite large and can take up to several minutes to display.
About Our Data
- Data come from automatic readings at the Stanford Foothills Weather Station.
- Data collection began on October 16th, 2002.
- Empty cells represent missing data.
- Collection identifies frequency with which this data set is collected (Collection 110 means once every 10 minutes).
- Day refers to Julian day (January 1st is Day 1, October 16th is Day 289).
- Hour is hour-minute (hhmm), Pacific Standard Time; during Summer daylight savings time, 1 hour must be added to the time shown.
Rainfall, Relative Humidity, Solar Radiation & Soil Water Content
- Relative Humidity is a percentage.
- Pyranometer Average measures average solar radiation in Watts per square meter in the previous hour.
- Soil Water Content measures volumetric water content of porous media, in percentage.
- Rainfall is the total for the previous hour, measured in milimeters.
- Battery Voltage measures the charge of the weather station battery, in Volts.
- Water Period is a parameter used for the internal calculation of soil water content, and is collected for calibration purposes only.
Wind Speed, Direction and Standard Deviation
- Wind Speed is measured in meters per second.
- Wind Vector is mean direction, measured in degrees (0=North; 180=South).
- Wind SD is standard deviation of direction, measured in degrees.
Air & Soil Temperatures, & Barometric Pressure
- Temperature Air is air temperature measured in degrees Celsius.
- Barometric Pressure is measured in milibars.
- Temperature Soil is soil temperature measured in degrees Celsius.
- Temperature Internal is station internal temperature measured in degrees Celsius.
