Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM):
What Is It and Can It Help You?

Stanford School of Medicine

Questions and discussion will follow the talk. A Consumer CAM Resource Sheet will be provided to the audience. Christopher Gardner, Ph.D., Director of Nutrition Studies at Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention, will talk about the changing attitudes and acceptance of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) by the U.S. government, the medical community, and the general public. Dr. Gardner will explore the role of CAM, highlighting several on-going Nutrition Research Studies at Stanford and their impact on weight management and prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

The current Stanford CAM studies are exploring the effects of:

  • soy on prostate, breast and bone
  • ginkgo biloba on narrowing of the arteries in the legs
  • four different diets on weight loss
  • garlic on cholesterol.
