Hey CEE Seniors (and other interested students), The exam is administered by California's Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and is the first step towards professional registration. It's essentially a cumulative test that covers your entire undergraduate education plus some material that you may never have covered. It is an eight-hour exam with material from General, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical, and Industrial Engineering.
With a little preparation and your studies at Stanford you are well-prepared to succeed on the exam. You should take the exam now while the engineering fundamentals are fresh in your mind. Watch this space for more information!
But why take this test in the first place? The benefits of professional licensing:
Job Opportunities - Employers want engineers who show a commitment to the future by becoming licensed
Consulting - Only PE's can consult in private practice and serve as expert witnesses in court
Promotions - Many employers in industry and government require licensure for advancement to senior engineering positions
Respect - PE's gain the respect of peers within the engineering community, where the desire to excel runs high
Ensuring the Future - As laws change and international agreements concerning the requirements to be licensed are adopted, a PE license may become more of a necessity
