Student Suspensions: TO DO Checklist for Students
During a term of suspension, a student loses all rights and privileges afforded Stanford students in good standing. That means, among other things, that you may not transfer credits earned elsewhere during a suspension to meet Stanford's degree requirements. In addition, you may not live in University housing during a suspension. Nor may you participate in any University-sponsored activity during a suspension, whether or not the activity is academic or extra-curricular.
Suggested tasks students should take care of pre- & post-suspension from Stanford:Before Leaving Stanford
- Contact your academic advisor about your upcoming suspension.
- Read the information pertaining to Leave of Absences from Stanford University in the Stanford Bulletin and on the Registrar’s Office Web site: http://registrar.stanford.edu/students/courses/#loa (Undergraduate Students) and http://www.stanford.edu/dept/DoR/GSH (Graduate Students). NOTE: You do not need to fill out a Leave of Absence (LOA) form. However, the most up-to-date information about the impact of time away will be located there.
- The Judicial Affairs Office will automatically notify the Office of the University Registrar about your suspension. The Office of the University Registrar will discontinue your student status for the quarter(s) of suspension, which will terminate your student services and privileges. Students who are suspended are not eligible to utilize any University services during their quarter(s) of suspension, nor are they allowed to transfer in units taken elsewhere during the suspension.
- International students should contact Bechtel International Center (650/723-1831) regarding visa and other concerns.
- File a TOC (Termination of Occupancy) form with Housing Assignment Services (650/725-2810). (Greek house residents should notify their house president and join the Wait List for the returning quarter.) Late fees will be waived only if you were notified of your suspension after the deadline.
- Clear all bills with the Cashier's Office (650/723-1676) in Student Financial Services.
- If receiving Financial Aid, contact Student Loans (650/723-2183).
- If you are covered under Stanford Cardinal Care health insurance, contact Vaden Student Health Center (650/498-2336 Ext. 4) to discontinue coverage during the suspension period. If you have Cardinal Care health insurance while enrolled at Stanford and need coverage to continue during your quarter(s) of suspension, please make these arrangements with the Vaden Health Insurance Office prior to your quarter(s) of suspension.
Preparing to Return/Returning to Stanford
- Contact the Judicial Affairs Administrator (Eileen Varner, 650/725-2485) if you have concerns about reinstatement.
NOTE: Reinstatement occurs on the day after the last day of finals of the quarter of suspension. The Judicial Affairs Office will automatically contact the Office of the University Registrar regarding your reinstatement; there is no need to contact the Office of the University Registrar regarding this matter.
- If planning to live on campus, contact Housing Assignment Services prior to the quarter that you plan to return to get on the waiting list and meet all deadlines related to inclusion in the on-campus housing draw. Deadlines and related information are listed on their Web site. If planning to live off campus, contact Community Housing Services (which maintains computerized listings of private rooms, houses, and apartments in surrounding communities), at 650/723-3906.
- Contact the Financial Aid Office in order to resume financial aid disbursements, if applicable. If the Financial Aid Office cannot process your application while the hold is in place, please ask them to verify with the Judicial Affairs Office the date your hold will be lifted.
- International Students should contact Bechtel International Center regarding visa and other other concerns BEFORE returning to the United States.
- Contact Student Financial Services regarding payment of tuition and other student fees.
- To resume Cardinal Care health insurance, if applicable (i.e., you are not covered by an outside health insurance carrier), contact the Vaden Student Health Center.
- Contact your academic advisor in preparation for your return to Stanford.
- Register for classes following reinstatement.
