Professional Development Resources

IHUM fellows have access to various kinds of resources to help them prepare to become future teachers, researchers and administrators.  Fellows have access to professional development funds, technology training, a research leave and regular assistance with the development of their job search and teaching materials.

Funds for Professional Development

All regular fellows are eligible for up to $2800 of professional development funds in 2008-09.  IHUM provides each teaching fellow with $2000 (from September through August), and the University provides every employee with $800 in STAP (Staff Training Assistance Program) funds (also from September through August).

Professional Development Support for Technology Training

On request, IHUM’s Academic Technology Specialist can provide one-on-one training and group sessions for fellows who wish to develop their skills in the use of technology for research and teaching.

Leave Quarter

During the second-year of the IHUM fellowship, fellows are eligible for release from teaching duties for one quarter.  Fellows typically use this time to conduct research and scholarship. Fellows on leave should be available to consult with their teaching team about course planning for the quarter that they return.   If they leave the Stanford area, they are expected to maintain email contact with the program.

Assistant Director

The position of the assistant director is to provide counsel and support to fellows, both individually and as a group.  The assistant director assists fellows in preparing teaching and job search materials including job letters, curriculum vitae, teaching statements, and job talks.  The assistant director also tries to provide structured opportunities for fellows to receive assistance with writing book proposals, shaping dissertation chapters into articles and preparing book manuscripts for editors.
