Amanda Greene is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Stanford University Department of Philosophy, and she specializes in ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, and ancient philosophy.  Her dissertation research is on perfectionist theories of democratic legitimacy in the face of disagreement about human values.  She has taught in the philosophy department for two years, in ethics, logic, and political philosophy.

Before her graduate studies, Amanda worked professionally for five years in a variety of capacities.  She served as an economic policy advisor to an Australian think tank focused on reforming welfare in indigenous communities.  She was based in Mumbai for two years, heading GiveIndia’s Corporate Philanthropy Services.  In this capacity she advised top Indian corporations on strategic philanthropy, helping them develop and implement innovative social initiatives by partnering with the best grassroots non-profits.  Amanda was also a strategy consultant for two years with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Atlanta.  During that time she advised senior clients in several different industries, with a focus on brand management, e-commerce, marketing, and organizational change.

Amanda has been a Visiting Research Fellow at Columbia University Law School (2007) and at the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies, Geneva (2010).  Prior to arriving at Stanford, she earned an M.Phil. in Philosophical Theology from the University of Oxford, in which her thesis on the voluntariness of belief was given a mark of Distinction.  She earned a BA with Honors in Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

When she’s not reading Plato, she is probably either sailing in the SF Bay, riding her motorbike, or watching the UNC Tarheels win basketball games.
