Constructing a Reasonable and Appropriate Budget

Budget Guidelines and Policies

Student grants are intended to provide student projects with financial resources that would otherwise be unavailable. An integral part of your grant application is a line-item budget, indicating how much money your project needs and how the money will be spent.

Your budget total is limited by the type of grant for which you are applying:

  • $1500 for a Small Grant or Conference Grant
  • $3000 for an Angel Grant
  • $6000 for a Major Grant or Chappell Lougee Scholarship

Grants are primarily used for research expenses, such as:

  • travel
  • food and lodging
  • lab or artistic supplies
  • books and photocopies
  • human subjects payments or gifts

Major Grant and Chappell Lougee Scholarship applicants who are committing to a full-time summer research project may use any grant amount not dedicated to other research expenses as a stipend, to partially compensate for the inability to work over the summer in question.

Prohibited expenses include:

  • travel or any other support for trips to countries with State Department Travel Warnings
  • computer equipment or software
  • hiring assistants, performers, or other external services

Exceptions to these prohibited expenses are exceptionally rare.

Students with Financial Need

UAR does not judge any student's level of financial need. The Financial Aid Office determines each student's relative level of need and, under some circumstances, makes its conclusions available to UAR staff.

Major Grant and Chappell Lougee Scholarship applicants who show financial need may request a stipend, even if this request pushes their budget total over the normal limit. Conference Grant applicants who show financial need may request funds for food and lodging associated with their conference travel.
If you make one of these need-based requests, UAR staff will contact the Financial Aid Office to determine your level of need. You do not need to provide UAR with any other information.
