Arts Intensive: Staff Opportunities

The Arts Intensive Program is a residential summer program offering a unique immersion into the process of making art. The program is characterized by an atmosphere of intense creative exploration, in which students, through collaboration with their instructors, peers, and guest artists, create a community.  Classes meet for two to three hours each weekday (9 or 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Field trips, lectures, and other arts activities will be planned for evenings and weekends. Students will choose from among 8 seminars focusing on a specific art form.  Seminars typically culminate in the creation of individual and/or group projects. Depending on the discipline and focus of the seminar, students may be conducting research, working in labs, engaged in close readings of texts, or developing presentation skills.

Student staff, including Arts Intensive Program Assistants (AIPAs) and a Resident Assistant Director, are instrumental in fostering the creative community of Arts Intensive.

Arts Intensive Program Assistant

AIPAs support the instructor and students in exploring the focus of their seminar and the arts more generally through their roles as a teaching assistant and residence assistant. The AIPAs support the logistical elements necessary to create an immersion residential experience, provide support and leadership in the classroom and with outside associated activities, and will have some responsibilities as administrative liaisons between the faculty and September Studies staff. AIPAs are the primary point of contact for students in the program, responsible for students in and outside of the classroom.

·As a Teaching Assistant, AIPAs will have the unique opportunity to work closely with arts faculty and build their knowledge of the art form as they learn about the teaching of creative skills.

·As a Residence Assistant, living in the Arts Intensive Program residence with their students, AIPAs use out of class time to foster collaborative and peer learning, provide social opportunities for bonding, and are available as mentors to their students.

·As an Administrative Liaison, working with September Studies Staff, SCAs are responsible for arranging field trips, budget updates, following purchasing policies, and turning in documentation in a timely manner.

Each instructor will be assisted by two AIPAs, who report to and collaborate with the faculty as well as a Residence Director in the dorm. Training and orientation of AIPAs are required and take place the weekend prior to the start of the program. Some instructors will request AIPA participation in on-line discussions during the summer months.

 

Qualifications

Any student who will be a junior, senior, or co-term student in 2012-2013 and is in good academic standing is eligible to apply. Note: Co-terminal students or recently graduated students are eligible to apply for AIPA undergraduate positions. (In some instances, one of the AIPAs may be a graduate student. The graduate AIPA is required to live in residence with student participants.)  AIPAs exhibit the following qualifications:

·Ability to articulate the goals of Arts Intensive and to use sound judgment in supporting program goals. Ability to be on call evenings, weekends, and during regular 8-to-5 working hours. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, set priorities, and follow through in a timely manner.

·Ability to work effectively with a variety of people including a diverse student body. Ability to maintain high level of humor, self-motivation, and enthusiasm.

·Demonstrated excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage and coordinate a variety of functions and to problem-solve. Ability to carefully plan and track financial expenditures. Familiarity with University academic resources.

·Academic or research experience relevant to the content of the Arts Intensive course and sufficient to allow the AIPA to serve as a teaching assistant to a member of the Arts Intensive Program faculty.

 

Previous experience as a TA, RA, PM, or Theme Associate is desirable but not required.

Because training for New Student Orientation (NSO) and most Residence Staff positions conflicts with the Arts Intensive Program dates, if you are selected for both positions you must choose between them. AIPAs cannot participate in both Bing Honors College and Sophomore College either as staff or as a participant.

AIPAs cannot work a full- or part-time job or travel outside of required class activities during the program.

Arts Intensive Program concludes on Friday, September 23; however, staff and participants move into on-campus fall residences Friday, September 16. AIPAs must make their own living arrangements for September 16-23 if they are not moving to on-campus residences. The program dining contract concludes on the evening of Thursday, September 22; AIPAs are responsible for their own dining after this point, including those in fall residences without dining facilities until Monday, September 26.

AIPA training dates

AIPAs must arrive on the afternoon of Saturday, September 1, 2012, between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. and begin training that evening through September 3. Staff duties will continue through September 21, 2012. (NOTE: There will be one additional program-planning meeting in Spring Quarter. All AIPAs are required to attend this planning session.)

Student Participants

All student participants will arrive the afternoon of Monday, September 3, 2012, between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.  The program will remain in session until September 21, 2012. Staff and students are required to attend additional class events scheduled after this date, such as class presentations or field trips, and cross-seminar, or program-wide events through Friday, September 21.

Compensation

Arts Intensive Program Assistants will receive a stipend of $1,000 in addition to room and board for full-time work during the program dates (September 1 - September 21). Graduate AIPAs will receive room, board, and a stipend of $1,200 for full-time work during the course of the program. (Stipends are taxable income and paid in a lump sum soon after September 30.)

You may apply to serve as an Arts Intensive Program Assistant with up to two professors (a separate application will be required for each one). You may serve as a Arts Intensive Program Assistant (AIPA) for only one seminar. In addition, you must send your unofficial transcript to your course faculty by Tuesday, March 6.

Instructors select among applicants for AIPA positions. If selected for more than one course or position, students may choose which course to accept. A commitment form must be filled out by March 30, 5 p.m.

Resident Assistant Director

Resident Assistant Directors (RADs) work with the Residence Dean to insure that all aspects of student life are consistent with the program objectives of fostering an intellectual and scholarly community.  Each RAD lives in a September Studies residences (RADs arrive on August 31 and stay through September 13 or 14). RADs rotate on an on-call schedule to provide 24 hours/day accessibility to student-staff and students. RADs directly supervise and support September Studies student staff in the dorms, while the Residence Dean is primarily responsible for responding to emergency situations and addressing issues of student misconduct. Compensation will be a stipend of $2,000 plus room and board for the period during which program participants live in program-assigned housing.   If interested, please send your cover letter and resume to Lisa Lampe.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

In May, August, and/or early September

•       In conjunction with the RD, other RADs, and September Studies staff, plan how to achieve the goals of a strong community and atmosphere of intellectual exploration and fellowship in the dorms.

During September Studies

•       Set up materials (September 1) and participate in and help direct portions of SCA training (regarding residential life) on September 2 and 3.

•       Live in the dorm and supervise residents; serve as liaison with regular-year Resident Fellow; maintain building security, including communication of security issues to residents; resolve problems with facilities, personal conflicts, etc.

•       Help program assistants establish and build a strong sense of community through personal example and by planning and coordinating residential activities in conjunction with program assistants, i.e. dorm meetings, sports events, or other bonding activities.

•       Coordinate and supervise program assistants, including RCCs, making responsibilities clear and ensuring their accomplishment through regular staff meetings and other communication.

•       Plan and coordinate, with other RADs and September Studies staff, program-wide and/or local events, i.e. faculty night, sporting events, etc.

•       Act as liaison with September Studies staff for communicating with students, providing support for dorm-based classes such as transporting or distributing materials, arranging audio-visual equipment, and other duties as needed.
