Get Help with an Oral Presentation

The Oral Communication Program offers courses, workshops, and appointments that are open to all Stanford students. Students can meet with Oral Communication Tutors (OCTs), who work in Meyer Library Suite 123, to:

  • Brainstorm
  • Rehearse presentations
  • Videotape speech rehearsals
  • Design effective visual aids
  • Reduce speech anxiety
  • Practice for job interviews

How do I schedule an individual or group appointment?

  • Go to TutorTrac (sututor.stanford.edu) to log in through WebAuth.
  • Once you log in, click on "Search Availabilities".
  • Pick "OCP:OralComm.Tutoring" as your center.
  • Look for any dates and times that work for you.
  • Click on the time slot and an appointment entry screen appears. You will need to select "General Presentation Coaching" or "Mock Interview" for the Reason field.
  • Save your appointment and you're all set. You will receive a confirmation email.
Please note: To rehearse a speech that's 5 min or more, book 60 min by choosing two 30 min sessions back-to-back.
  • Contact the OCT Manager at lindsey.yeager@stanford.edu you have questions about appointment scheduling.

Where are OCT appointments held?

  • OCT appointments are held in Meyer Library Suite 123. Enter Meyer 123 from the exterior of Meyer (do not use the main library entrance). The Meyer 123 door faces the clocktower and the main quad.

What equipment is available during appointments?

  • PC laptop
  • InFocus projector
  • Laptop cables (and Mac laptop adaptors)
  • Podium and whiteboard
  • TV and VCR
  • Videocamera

When are drop-in hours?

  • Students who need help at the last minute are welcome to drop by Meyer 123 weekdays between 10am and 11pm and weekend afternoons to see if OCTs have open appointment slots. We strongly encourage students to schedule appointments, however, to ensure that they can receive help at the times they need it.

What is the cancellation policy for appointments?

  • Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance. We ask that students who miss the cancellation deadline make every effort to come to their appointments and avoid missing them.
  • If you are unable to attend an appointment, it is important to cancel so the shift is available for another student. If you repeatedly miss appointments without cancelling before the deadline, we may limit your ability schedule appointments with OCTs.

What courses, workshops, and other resources are available?

  • Oral Communication Program courses. Students can enroll in one- to three-unit courses offered by the Oral Communication Program. These courses focus on topics such as formal and informal speaking, expanding vocal range and stamina, using visual aids effectively, enhancing confidence, and improving articulation.
  • Drop-in Vocal Yoga Sessions. These sessions are open to the public and are held every Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. during Weeks 2-10 each quarter in Memorial Auditorium, Room 129. Contact thomas@stanford.edu for more information.
  • T.E.A. (Thursday English Advising): These drop-in sessions are open to non-native English speakers (Stanford undergrads and grad students) and held Thursdays during the academic year from 4:00-5:30pm in the Hume Writing Center (460-020). Oral Communication Tutors and writing tutors from the HWC are available to guide casual English conversation practice. For more information, view our flyer or contact lindsey.yeager@stanford.edu
  • Oral Presentation Support through the Technical Communications Program. The Technical Communications Program in the School of Engineering offers drop-in tutoring and elective courses to help students develop their public speaking skills.
