HWC Services for Undergraduate Students

Welcome Undergraduates ! 

The Hume Writing Center offers free one- on-one consulting (tutoring) to students working on any kind of writing or digital media project at any stage of the  process and for any assignment, from PWR and IHUM to WIM and Honors theses, and every assignment in between. Students can make an appointment or drop-in either at the main location or at a number of satellite locations in residences, dining halls, and other campus gathering places.  More than half of our tutors are undergraduate students, carefully chosen and highly trained.

Writing Center Appointments

30 or 60 minute sessions, depending on the length of the project.
120 minutes allowed per student per week.
Read Appointment and Tutoring Policies before scheduling if you're here for the first time.
Appointments must be canceled online by 4:00 p.m. the day before.

Drop-in Consulting

Available in the Hume Writing Center and around campus.
We have drop-in tutors available every hour the Center is open.

Honors and WIM Consulting

The Hume Writing Center provides support and resources for students engaged in writing an Honors thesis or working on a Writing in the Major project.

Special IHUM Group Tutoring Sessions

Need additional support as you draft your IHUM essay? The Hume Writing Center is pleased to announce Group Tutoring Sessions, a chance for you to work with your peers and with a writing tutor as you draft your essay. Look out for announcements in your residences and check the Google docs for the most up to date information about when and where!

IntroSem Consulting

During the summer, the Hume Writing Center offers online IntroSem consulting to help undergraduate students write compelling application essays, even while they are off-campus and abroad.  Students are able to chat with a trained writing consultant in real time by connecting through Google Chat (VChat) and Google docs. During the academic year, we offer students the same high quality consultation in person.

Becoming a Peer Writing Consultant

All Stanford undergraduates are invited to apply to become Hume Writing Center peer writing consultants. The application process is competitive; every year in February, 15-20 new tutors are hired from a pool of 50-60 applicants. During the spring quarter, new consultants take a 3-credit training course, PWR195, and then begin tutoring the following fall. Peer consultants are chosen on the strength of their written application, faculty recommendations, and an interview. Click here for some position details.
