Peer Tutor Application Information

Becoming a Peer Writing Tutor

All Stanford undergraduates are invited to apply to become Hume Writing Center peer writing tutors (based in the Center or in a residence hall). The application process is competitive; every year in February, from a pool of 50-60 applicants, approximately 15-18 new tutors are hired.  During the spring quarter, new tutors take a 3-credit training course, PWR 195, and then begin tutoring the following fall.  Peer tutors are chosen on the strength of their application, letters of recommendations, and an interview.

In Spring 2012, PWR 195 is taught by Julia Bleakney, Director of the Hume Writing Center, on Tuesdays 7:00-8:50 p.m.

Drop-in Tutors

Most tutors offer drop-in hours either in the main location of the Hume Writing Center (Margaret Jacks Hall, Building 460, Room 20) or at one of several satellite locations across the campus. Drop-in tutors are paid between $12-15 per hour and work 4 hours a week.

Resident Writing Tutors

Between 10-15 Resident Writing Tutors live and conduct their tutoring hours in residence halls as part of a dorm staff. RWTs are paid between $12-13 an hour and work 4-6 hours week (plus an hour every week for a dorm staff meeting).

Application Information Sessions

We strongly encourage interested applicants to attend an information session before applying for a position as a tutor. Details of these sessions will be posted here in early January.
