The Hume Writing Center provides many resources to help you with your Honors project.

WRITING CONSULTATIONS

Make an appointment or a series of appointments to work with an experienced writing consultant in the Center.

Thesis are difficult new genres for undergraduates because it is the longest piece of sustained research writing they produce.  In addition to assisting students with tradition writing issues such as clarifying argument and thesis, framing research, improving transitions or providing revising strategies, we also work with students on scheduling and planning, discussing how to stay motivated, overcoming writer’s block, outlining and organizing sections of thesis, assessing the writing schedule for their honors thesis.

To find a consultant whose background and interests match yours, please review the short biographies of lecturer consultants.  If students are interested and a mutual agreement has been reached with the consultant, students may arrange to make on-going weekly appointments with a specific consultant by emailing writingcenter@stanford.edu.

HONORS THESIS BOOT CAMPS

What is the Honors Thesis Boot Camp?  In an Honors Thesis Boot Camp,  we provide students with a space to get motivated and write. Honors Boot Camps include a 30-minute writing orientation to discuss goal-setting and motivation strategies for working on longer writing projects such as the honors thesis.

Students can customize the writing boot camp to their needs, scheduling one or two days of intense writing over a weekend or a couple of evenings. It can range from as little as two hours or as long as six hours.  We host these boot camps in the Hume Writing Center, providing a quiet place to work and a writing consultant who can answer questions about your writing or talk with you about specific sections of your thesis.  Students are provided with free snacks and drinks.

Department and Open Boot Camps:  We offer two types of Honors Thesis Boot Camps: department or program-specific boot camp and open camps. The department or program-specific boot camp is hosted for students from a single department/ program.  The Open Boot Camp is offered to any Honors thesis writer.  For open boot camps, spaces are limited to 25 students, first-come, first serve. For more information about boot camps, email writingcenter@stanford.edu.

If you have a group of friends writing theses and would like to participate in a boot camp together, please write to us with some possible evenings or weekends that will fit your schedule.

CONSULTATIONS FOR POSTER DESIGN AND POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS

The Hume Writing Center also offers digital media consultations for students working on visual and multimedia projects.  These consultants work with students to help them communicate more clearly and effectively through the design and visual display of information on their research posters and PowerPoint/Prezi.   For more information about what we do and who we are, visit our digital media page.
