The HWC offers your students many services, including one-one-tutoring for any writing task and at any stage of the writing process (from brainstorming to final editing) and tailored workshops on specific aspects of writing suitable for your course. We also offer a number of services directly to faculty, especially those teaching WiM courses, but generally to any faculty member interested in using writing well to teach disciplinary course material. This Spring 2011, we are tutoring students on creating effective arguments on digital media projects--such as PowerPoint, websites, social apps. etc.
The Writing Center is staffed by expert writers and experienced, trained tutors. Undergraduate and Graduate Students can sign up for up to 120 minutes of tutoring per week, scheduled for 30 or 60 minutes. These sessions might include work on such techniques as focus, organization, research skills, integrating ideas from various sources, transitions, and style. See "Make an Appointment" for further information.
Peer tutors are undergraduates or graduate students who have been trained to help students at any stage of the writing process and can work with you on any piece of writing, from an IHUM or PWR essay to a grant proposal or cover letter. Please go to "See a Drop-in Consultant" for further information.
To request a workshop or for further assistance, please email us or contact us at (650) 723-0045.
In the request specify the day(s) and time(s) you'd like us to meet your students as well as the content of the workshop. Click on Current Workshops to see a list of our workshop selection (this will open a PDF).
You may schedule workshops either during your class period or outside your class period. If you schedule a workshop outside your class period, you'll be responsible for making sure your students attend. We try to hold all our workshops in the main location of the Writing Center, though if it's otherwise occupied or if you prefer, we can also use your classroom.
Please note: All workshops are 50 minutes long.
If you are a faculty member teaching a Writing in the Major course at Stanford, our comprehensive page Resources for Teaching Writing will hopefully be of use to you.
