Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a specific program or tour I should attend if I am interested in applying as an undergraduate?

If you are a prospective undergraduate, you may want to consider making a reservation for our Discover Stanford program. This 150-minute program consists of a walking tour of the campus followed by an information session with an admission officer.  The whole program is intended for high school juniors and seniors and their parents. Reservations are required, and can be made online at the website of the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Discover Stanford is offered Monday through Friday from June to December.

If you have specific questions about Discover Stanford, you may wish to consult our Discover Stanford Frequently Asked Questions.

How do I let the Office of Undergraduate Admission know that I was here? Is there somewhere I should sign in?

A visit to a college campus is first and foremost an opportunity for you to explore how comfortable the college’s academic, social, residential and environmental fit is for you. Your visit to our campus is not part of the admission or application process beyond this opportunity.

Stanford University does not offer interviews or keep records of prospective students who have visited the campus. While reservations are required for the Discover Stanford program, no additional sign-in beyond the online Discover Stanford reservation is necessary.

I’m interested in graduate study at Stanford. How can I find out more about applying to the program that interests me?

Requirements for graduate admission vary greatly among departments and programs. Information about a particular discipline is available from the department, program, or professional school. The Registrar’s Office provides general information about graduate degree programs.

Graduate schools, departments, and programs specifically request that prospective students thoroughly research their area of interest using the internet before making direct inquiries to the University. Stanford University is composed of seven schools granting graduate level degrees, and each individual school provides extensive information online detailing their programs, degrees offered, faculty areas of interest, research facilities, and admission procedures. After completing research using the internet, prospective graduate students are encouraged to contact their program of interest to obtain further details concerning possible meetings and other sessions that might be of interest.

I am a prospective student and will be visiting the campus. Can I sit in on classes?

During the academic year, the Visitor Center can provide a list of classes open for prospective students who wish to sit in. Prospective students can drop by the Visitor Center or the Office of Undergraduate Admission to obtain this information.

If visiting a class is a high priority for you, be advised that those courses which allow prospective students to sit in generally have a lecture-based format, are offered on the hour during weekday mornings, and last for approximately one hour. To ensure that you will be able to sit in on a course in an academic area of your interest while visiting Stanford, be sure to coordinate your intentions and itinerary when making reservations for other tours or programs. Also, ensure that you are visiting while classes are in session and not during finals or academic breaks. Stanford University operates on the quarter system, and our class calendar can differ significantly from those of other institutions.

Be advised that sitting in on a class during Summer Quarter is not possible, as course options are limited and often cater specifically to summer camp or conference audiences.
