The Department of Athletics offers 34 NCAA Division I varsity sports – 18 for women, 15 for men and one coed sport – with about 800 students participating in intercollegiate sports. “Home of Champions” is the catchphrase for the Stanford Athletic Department because no other athletic department in the country has experienced the success Stanford has achieved since the 1980s. Considered the dominant athletic program nationally, Stanford has captured 10 consecutive Directors’ Cup titles (1995–2004), an award that honors the nation’s top overall Division I athletic program. Thirty-four athletes and coaches represented Stanford at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
