Undergraduate Admission
AP, IB, or Other Advanced Exams Credit

Advanced or transfer credit is always reviewed and awarded by the Stanford Registrar according to Faculty Senate policy. This policy may change from year to year, so you should always consult the most recent Stanford Bulletin and the Registrar’s website for the most current information.

The explanations cited below do not obligate the University nor guarantee the awarding of college credit.

The Advanced Placement policy allows up to 10 units of credit per discipline for some of the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) Advanced Placement examinations.

The International Baccalaureate Examination may be awarded a maximum of 10 units of credit per discipline for some scores of 5, 6, or 7 in the Higher Level. Subsidiary Level exams, Theory of Knowledge or General Paper do not warrant any units at Stanford.

Advanced placement examinations such as General Certificate of Education "A" levels, French Baccalaureate and German Abitur may be awarded a maximum of 12 units per discipline for some of the subjects.

Stanford awards a maximum of 45 units of credit for advanced placement examinations.

AP examinations do not satisfy the General Education Requirements with the exception of the language requirement. AP scores of 4 or 5 in a foreign language will satisfy the University foreign language requirement.

AP credit may be applied as elective units toward graduation and toward the major, if allowed by the major department. Please note that AP credit may be removed from your record if subsequent Stanford course work duplicates AP credit course content.

For more information about the Stanford University Advanced Placement policy, contact the External Credit Evaluation section of the Office of the University Registrar.

Please note: Effective with the Autumn 2004 entering class, some AP exams will no longer be credited toward the undergraduate degree.
